Moredun Housing Estate

A few weeks ago, me and my pal were bored in town so we decided to take a random bus to anywhere for a banter, we ended up taking an 8 and ended up in Moredun. Moredun is a housing estate 2 minutes up the road from Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. It is made up of six 15-storey tower blocks and some low-rise blocks of maisonettes (I don't know how many though). Moredun used to be very rundown until tenants living in the area fought for renovation in the mid - late 1990's. Unlike most high-rise renovations, the buildings were not plastered in tacky colours and still look good today (well...for high flats anyway!). Take a look at this artical - http://living.scotsman.com/index.cfm?id=445022005

Here are some pics I took in Moredun:

Also, here are some pics (taken by Dave Henniker) of the flats many many years ago, The first pic is of the tower blocks in 1977 before they had been refurbished, and the second one is of the tower blocks in 2001, the difference in appearance is big. These pictures have been reduced in quality and size, please go to http://www.henniker.com/ for full size versions and many other great pics of Edinburgh and its suburbs.

31st March 2007:
I was going past Moredun today and got some more pics. I've got a new camera phone now which takes great pics so the pics are now much better.

Apologies! I see that this article was posted in 2006, and so my praise for it is somewhat overdue! I only came across it 2 days ago.

Well, the article is brilliantly written, and I can say that because I lived here from birth until turning 12 in 1981! The pictures take me back to my childhood there - I had the best childhood anyone could have - there were the climbing frames, the burn (Burdiehouse Burn), the maisonettes to play around. There was Rudy the icecream van as well as Robert Dunn's and Jackie's vans! Yes, I have never been happier than when I lived there!

Thank you so much for thisarticle, excellent!

Richard Purvey, I lived at 15/5 Marytree House until 1981.
